MAX640ESA-T Application Field and Working Principle

The MAX640ESA-T is an ultra-low-power fixed-frequency converter, accurately regulating the output voltage from an input voltage exceeding the output voltage by up to 10 V. It can operate down to 1.5 V and achieve efficiencies greater than 82% at 5 V IN to 3.3 V OUT , and greater than 80% at 3 V IN to 3.3 V OUT . Working Principle

The MAX640ESA-T is based on topology of an inductor-switch-inductor based boost-type dc-dc regulator. In a nutshell, The basic design of the MAX640ESA-T has the voltage regulator connected with a leaky inductor, which allows the output voltage to capture the input voltage over a relatively long period of time. As the output voltage starts to drop, the current coming from the input is less than what it would be without the inductor, causing the output voltage to drop. This makes it possible to regulate the output voltage even when there is an abnormally high input, thus providing a fixed output voltage even with varying input voltages.

The MAX640ESA-T is capable of drawing current from the differential between input and output. This not only helps to regulate output voltage, but also helps to achieve high efficiency, which is typically greater than 82% for 5V-3.3V applications and greater than 80% for 3V-3.3V applications.
