Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) is an important class of Integrated Circuits (ICs) in a system that interacts with the power supply and other components to optimize the power dissipation and system performance. PMICs are powered by some dedicated voltages and are designed for a specific purpose. One of such purpose is battery management, for which one of the popular PMIC is MAX6428EHUR+T. In this article, we are going to discuss the application fields and working principle of the MAX6428EHUR+T device.The MAX6428EHUR+T is a CMOS-based PMIC used for battery management applications. It is a complete solution for battery-operated applications and designs where fuel gauges or over-discharge/over-voltage protection are used. The device is designed with a built-in Over Voltage Protection (OVP) feature that limits higher voltage output levels. In addition, an adjustable current sink/source is available for charging and/or discharging the battery. This feature prevents excessive current drain and helps maintain the battery charge. The other features of the MAX6428EHUR+T include high efficiency (95%), low system power dissipation and wide operating temperature range. The device also has a battery switchover feature which shuts down the system in case of a low battery condition. This helps prolong the battery life and restrict the impact of shorted cells. With its superior features, this PMIC offers excellent performance and reliability. It is extensively used in a variety of battery-operated applications such as cellular phones, laptop computers, remote control devices and wireless products.The MAX6428EHUR+T works as a switch between the bus voltage and the battery. When the bus voltage is higher than the preset value, the PMIC will act as a switch and direct the current toward the battery. On the other hand, when the battery voltage is higher than the preset value, the PMIC will direct the current toward the bus. The switching between the two points is done in a very precise and efficient manner.The device also contains two Comparator stages for Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and Under-Voltage Protection (UVP) functions, as well as a peak voltage detector. The OVP and UVP detect the rising and falling voltage levels, respectively. When the voltage exceeds the predetermined value, the device will shut down all the system operations.The current sink/source feature of the MAX6428EHUR+T provides adjustable current for charging and/or discharging the battery. The current sink/source will also help maintain the battery charge and prevent excessive current drain.The MAX6428EHUR+T also features a sleep/standby mode, enabling power saving at no load in low battery condition, as well as a thermal shutdown feature to protect against high-temperature operation.The MAX6428EHUR+T is a perfect solution for battery-operated applications. It is not only highly efficient and reliable, but also ensures minimal system power dissipation and wide operating temperature range, thereby making it an ideal choice for a range of battery-operated designs.
