The MAX660CPA is a synchronous buck voltage regulator that utilizes a low-power CMOS process to step down a voltage input of up to 39V to any regulated output voltage as low as 0.8V. It is a monolithic integrated circuit with all the necessary control, protection and monitoring circuitry on board, simplifying system design. The MAX660CPA device is ideal for powering microprocessors and peripheral circuitry with a narrow range of output voltages.

The MAX660CPA features a synchronous buck architecture with a programmable soft-start and can source output currents as high as 10A. To keep the output voltage constant, the buck converter uses a feedback loop which consists of a low-side PMOS switch, an inductor and a voltage reference. The output voltage is regulated by varying the on-time of the low-side switch. During the oscillator period, the upper MOSFET is off and the lower MOSFET is on from the start of the oscillator period until the current limit is reached. When the control loop senses an over-current condition, the lower MOSFET is turned off and the current will decay until the end of the period. This oscillating current is then smoothed off by the inductor and smoothing capacitors to generate the correct output voltage.

The MAX660CPA also incorporates a variety of protection features to ensure the safety and reliability of the system. It has an output current limit sensing fast-shutdown feature that will turn off the switching Mosfet immediately in the event of an over current condition, protecting the device from being damaged by overcurrent. It also has an inrush current limiter, thermal shutdown protection, and a PGOOD output to indicate the status of the output voltage.
