Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are devices that permit control of multiple integrated circuits for power management applications. The variability of available products and features enables PMICs to be used in a myriad of applications, from low-power designs to high-power, many-output designs. The MAX6709BUB+ is a versatile and easy-to-use Supervisory circuit for almost any power management application.
The MAX6709BUB+ provides three basic functions: Monitor, Reset, and Timeout. It monitors the power supply voltage and asserts a reset when the supply drops below a factory-programmable threshold. The customer often sets the threshold at some percentage or fixed level below the intended normal operating voltage. The MAX6709BUB+ will then keep reset asserted until VCC is restored beyond the reset threshold level.
In addition to resetting the device during a power failure, the MAX6709BUB+ can also be used to assert reset when VCC is in a safe operating area (SOA). This feature is especially useful for protecting system devices that are very sensitive to low or high supply voltages such as memories, MCUs, DSPs, D/A converters, and A/D converters.
The MAX6709BUB+ also has an integrated Watchdog Timer which causes the device to assert a reset after a factory-programmable number of Watchdog cycles. A Watchdog Programmable Timer prevents half-action undervoltage, logic errors, stuck in program loops, digital communication errors and timing mismatches from halting the microcontroller’s operations indefinitely.
The MAX6709BUB+ comes in an 8-pin MicroMax® package and is characterized for operation over a temperature range of −40°C to +85°C. It is composed of a voltage monitor and an RC oscillator connected to an active-low push/pull reset output. It monitors current levels, IRQ activity, temperature, and power supply voltage outputs to provide maximum system protection.
The MAX6709BUB+ can monitor up to three different voltage levels or multiplexed supplies. The reset threshold (VOL, or Output Voltage Low) is factory programmable from 1.105V to 4.25V in 12mV steps. The active-low push/pull RESET output is asserted when VCC is below the reset threshold for more than the reset timeout period (TOUT). Reset will remain asserted for the reset timeout period (TOUT) after VCC rises above the reset threshold level.
The MAX6709BUB+ is also equipped with an integrated window Watchdog TM (WDT) with adjustable time-out period. The WDT time-out period is factory programmable, and can be adjusted from 62.5ms to 4s in 1ms steps depending on the application. Re-program the WDT time-out period by re-setting the WDT ‘COUNT’ pin to VCC and then to 0V for one microsecond.
The MAX6709BUB+ features a flexible watchdog operation. The WDT runs either in Pause/Run or Sleep modes. While in Pause mode, WDT does not count and reset is not asserted. When the WDT is in Run mode, it counts the maximum number of cycles allowed and then re-asserts reset. The WDT can be paused and resumed via the dedicated pause/resume pin. The WDT can also operate in Sleep modes, where WDT information is retained even during power-down conditions when VCC goes below 1.2V. This allows the reset signal to remain asserted until the power supply is restored.
In addition to resetting the device during a power failure, the MAX6709BUB+ also provides protection against overvoltage and brownout conditions. The OVF circuit monitors the power supply voltage and can cause a reset signal to be asserted if the voltage rises above a factory-programmable voltage. This threshold is set between 4.25V and 5.35V in 12mV steps. The OVF circuit can also be used with the appropriate logic to cut off the power supply to the system if an overvoltage condition is detected.
The MAX6709BUB+ has an adjustable reset timeout period to further enhance system protection. This period is factory programmable from 64µs to 210ms. The reset period is useful for slow power supply transitions as well as applications that draw brief current spikes, such as DSPs or MCUs.
In summary, the MAX6709BUB+ Supervisory circuit provides excellent protection for almost any power management application. It provides adjustable parameters to monitor voltage, detect overvoltage and overcurrent conditions, and provides an adjustable reset timeout period. It also boasts an integratedWatchdog Timer and an adjustable window Watchdog timeout period. With its wide range of features, the MAX6709BUB+ can be used in many applications, from low-power designs to high-power applications.
