Product development today is increasingly complex, and the need to optimize the design of battery applications has become the focus of attention. To meet the needs of the customer, Texas Instruments (TI) has developed the MAX6776XKC+T battery management system. This gas gauge power management IC (PMIC) provides improved battery measurement accuracy and is specifically designed for two-cell Lithium-Ion battery applications.

The MAX6776XKC+T battery management system is a highly integrated over-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature protection PMIC for Lithium-Ion batteries. It is specifically designed for two-cell high-power applications such as notebook PCs, tablet PCs, and ultra-slim mobile handsets. The unique combination of system characteristics allows for a radically reduced solution size, without sacrificing performance, resulting in a significantly enhanced customer experience.

The MAX6776XKC+T offers a wide range of features, including voltage and current measurement, battery balancing, and over-voltage and over-temperature protection. The power management IC supports multiple cell configurations, including two- and three-cell Li-Ion batteries, and can be configured to operate with any battery chemistry. It also features an integrated, programmable discharge FET that can be used to manage the discharge current during normal, low battery voltage, or reverse battery conditions. In addition, the MAX6776XKC+T includes an on-chip, low power MCU that provides a wide range of functions for battery management system control.

The MAX6776XKC+T includes a high-precision current-sense amplifier that provides 10-bit resolution performance (32uV accuracy). This allows for precise, low-temperature coefficient, low-power current measurement for both charging and discharging. The battery monitoring accuracy is further enhanced by the integrated low drop-out voltage regulator which is used to power the internal solid-state temperature-sensing circuitry. This feature improves accuracy to ensure real-time temperature measurement.

The MAX6776XKC+T also features an integrated voltage division-based coulomb counter that can be used to measure total charge/discharge current up to 5A. The coulomb counter enables system designers to accurately monitor and measure total battery current, even in high-temperature and low battery voltage conditions. The MAX6776XKC+T also supports an integrated, low power 32 bit CPU that provides battery management system control functions, allowing designers to add more complex features such as battery state-of-health monitoring, accurate over-discharge protection, and safe battery charging.

The MAX6776XKC+T\'s accurate, low power design provides a variety of benefits for battery powered applications including improved battery performance and increased device life. It is well suited for systems that must operate for long periods of time without being recharged, such as medical devices, aircraft, underwater vehicles, and many mobile and embedded applications.
