.Voltage regulators are the integral part of the electrical engineering which helps to keep voltage and current in a consistent and regulated amount. They are made of different components like resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transistors. Linear voltage regulators, in particular, are used in a wide range of applications from converting the input voltage to a lower and regulated level output voltage to boost and transform the input level of voltage to the required output. One of the most extensively used evaluation boards which helps to evaluate the linear voltage regulator and its performance is MAX6791EVKIT+.
MAX6791EVKIT+ displays a wide range of application field and its working principles. It is based on the boost-buck architecture which enables to use the input voltage by up to 6-times. With the Boost-Buck, the produced output voltage can be configured up to 4 times higher than the input voltage. The wide operating input range of this voltage regulator device varies from 3.3V to 42V. It operates with the continuous load current of 6.5A and at peak amplifier exhibits 8A. Apart from that, this evaluation board provides a very good power efficiency rating of 90%. It also supports the world’s smallest step-up/down converter size due to the integrated low-impedance inductor.
The MAX6791EVKIT+ evaluation board also contains an on-board, configurable control loop compensation circuit which provides easy setting of the required parameters that helps to stabilize the output voltage. Moreover, the MAX6791EVKIT+ uses an external PMOS switches along with the external inductor. The external switches are used for the purpose of current limiting and a GND reference. The on-board boost inductor has an integrated metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) feature which helps to dissipate the inductor’s stored energy safely. The external inductor is also helpful in generating a higher voltage ripple during load transient.
Along with this, the MAX6791EVKIT+ evaluation board is also featured with an integrated power-good signal that assists in monitoring the output voltage setting. This evaluation board also exhibits a good line regulation of 1.1% and load regulation of 1.8% at the output voltage of 6V. Furthermore, the MAX6791EVKIT+ uses a small switching frequency variation from 60KHz to 1.5MHz and is also able to provide a fixed frequency with both adjustable and fixed switching frequency. This voltage regulator evaluation board offers several additional features such as temperature monitoring, typical current source, integrated over-temperature protection, on-board LEDs for status indication, on-board EN/ON button, and adjustable resistors for setting the desired output voltage. All these features together make MAX6791EVKIT+ a very widely used evaluation board for this specific device.
