MAX680EPA+ is a DC-DC switching regulator, a member of the PMIC (Power Management IC) family of voltage regulators. It is a monolithic integrated circuit specifically designed to step up, down or invert an input voltage of 5V. This integrated circuit can also be used as a voltage reference and amplifier.
The MAX680EPA+ is based on an advanced topology that implements an oscillator, a high-side and low-side MOSFET switch, an error stage, and associated control circuitry into a single integrated circuit. This topology integrates Level-Shift Pulse-Width Modulation (LSPWM) with Cross-Coupled PWM to implement regulation in both current-mode and voltage-mode systems within one package. Power regulation is achieved through current-mode control, which provides ultra-fast transient response and accurate regulation.
The device operates from a 4.5V to 26V input voltage range and has an adjustable 5V, 7V, 8.5V, 9V or 10V output voltage. The current limit is adjustable from 1.25A to 5A. Output voltage tracking is ensured via linear regulation with low output noise and ripple. The current loop bandwidth is designed to offer a fast compensation loop in order to maintain high switching frequency yet provide minimal overshoot and undershoot when the load is changed abruptly.
In addition to its adjustable output voltage, the MAX680EPA+ offers various features that make it suitable for many applications. It includes a low-dropout (LDO) voltage rail with a guaranteed accuracy of ±10% over a temperature range of 0°C to +70°C, eliminating the need for external temperature compensation. It also includes logic level override, a power-on reset, and soft-start functions to minimize input surge current.
The MAX680EPA+ also features a built-in overvoltage protection (OVP) selector, overcurrent protection (OCP), an adjustable dead time control, and built-in thermal shutdown capabilities. These features are designed to maximize performance and protect the device from overload, short circuits, and over-temperature conditions.
The MAX680EPA+ is typically used in high current applications, such as portable and handheld electronics, automobile electronics, laptop power adapters, and LED lighting systems. It is also used in communication systems, computers, and consumer electronics.
