The MAX694CPA is a highly advanced Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) which belongs to the Supervisors category of PMIC, and uses a push-pull output approach. It is specifically designed to provide special applications which require a robust and versatile PMIC which combines the best of both worlds, analog and digital hardware integration, specifically the analog-to-digital (A/D) converter, digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, and the external digital I/O module. This type of PMIC is particularly suitable for applications where power management system requirements change dynamically and require a large number of digital channels and/or an approach with a high switching frequency.

The MAX694CPA is designed with a simple yet powerful and efficient architecture. It is composed of a controller allowing configurable options, four synchronous buck regulators, and two low voltage comparators. The MAX694CPA’s configuration options are divided into two parts: the PMIC firmware, and the device settings. The firmware contains the information about how the PMIC interacts with the host processor, how the various pins are assigned for control, and how the various regulators are configured. The device settings are used to set the buck regulator operating frequency, load current limit, operating mode, and other parameters related to the enhanced stability and performance of the PMIC.

The controller of the MAX694CPA is fully programmable and can be easily modified, allowing a wide range of low-level application support. For example, the programmable threshold and time-out can be adjusted, and the controller can be configured to monitor voltages, program any one of the six digital I/O pins (including current limit and auto-protection functions), and providing monitoring and control of up to four Buck Regulators. This versatility of the MAX694CPA allows a much greater control and optimization over the power management system.

At the heart of the MAX694CPA is its four buck regulators. These four synchronous buck regulators provide maximum output voltage load regulation of approximately ±2-3%. This high precision is made possible by the integrated on-chip zero-drift error amplifier and the noise immunity of the buck regulator. The output voltage of the buck regulator is further regulated by the MAX694CPA’s active current limit, allowing the system to control the maximum load current. The buck regulator’s output is also able to handle a wide range of input voltage fluctuations, allowing for reliable output voltage levels.

Moreover, the buck regulators are each capable of turning-on at 85°C, instead of the normal 70°C, thus increasing the robustness of the power management solution. The MAX694CPA also contains a programmable fan speed control, allowing an active cooling system to be used to optimize the PMIC performance while maintaining a low temperature profile. This further improves the reliability and performance of the power management system.

The MAX694CPA also includes two low voltage comparators. These are additional voltage regulators which monitor the input voltage, and initiate an appropriate response if the input voltage is too high, low, or is left floating. The comparators detect overcurrent, overvoltage, and undervoltage conditions and are specifically designed to restart the PMIC if necessary without triggering a system restart.

The MAX694CPA’s architecture and features make it an ideal choice for PMIC applications with a wide range of switching frequencies, requiring high tolerance of the loads, and high levels of safety and reliability.
