The MAX820LCSE+ operation is based on a two-level comparison of the supply voltage. At upper and lower thresholds, an open drain output is activated to indicate either supply under-voltage (UV) or over-voltage (OV). The MAX820LCSE+ uses a maximum current sink of 800µA and can be used with external load resistors to set desired thresholds. Maximum leakage current is 7nA, which makes the MAX820LCSE+ suitable for battery-powered systems.

The MAX820LCSE+, in addition to monitoring the supply voltage, has an onboard watchdog timer. The watchdog provides an additional level of system protection by identifying system lockup that can happen when the application or control algorithm fails. If a reset has not been generated by the watchdog within a predefined timeout period, the watchdog output flag is activated. Furthermore, the MAX820LCSE+ contains power on turn of circuit features that allow the device to be placed in a powered off state via a manual reset button or other user inputs.
