The Maxim Integrated 8212MSA/PR supervisor family offers flexible monitoring options and low false trip rates for monitoring two independent systems or two voltages in the same system. It reduces component count without sacrificing system performance. It helps in improving system reliability, longevity and performance by easily configuring and providing multiple monitoring functions.

The 8212MSA/PR supervisor family features an additional voltage sense input (VINB), allowing users to select from three master-slave configurations. With one master and one slave, the 8212MSA/PR will monitor two independent systems, often referred to as "split supplies". With both masters running and VINB tied to VINA, the 8212MSA/PR provides single-voltage monitoring typically used when integrated circuits need to be monitored (often referred to as "integrated rail monitoring"). With both masters and VINB tied to VINB, the 8212MSA/PR will monitor two supplies in the same system.

The 8212MSA/PR consists of multiple blocks including a Power-on Reset (POR) block, a High Voltage Detector (HVD) block, two or three Low Voltage Detectors (LVD1 and LVD2), an Overtemperature Detector (OTD) block, an Undervoltage Detector (UVD) block, a Dual Comparator (DC) block, and an Output stage. For each voltage monitor (HVD, LVD1, LVD2 and UVD) comparator, the 8212MSA/PR has the flexibility to configure delay times and reset thresholds independently for each voltage monitor. This maximizes flexibility for the user for the specific system design. All the voltage monitor blocks, POR block and OTD block are connected in a single comparator OR configuration and the DC block is connected in an analog OR configuration with an active pull-up to provide extended monitoring and the outputs are connected in a voltage-controlled reset configuration. Once the 8212MSA/PR is powered-up, it will force the system into a reset state.

The 8212MSA/PR offers different configurations for different applications. The VINA/VINB power supply range is from 2.7V to 36V, and the RESET# minimum assertion time is 0.2ms and the minimum de-assertion (reset-off) time is 0.4ms. It also provides fault indication, manual reset, power good indicators and temporary brown-out detect feature with minimum reset pulse width of 120ms and the minimum reset pulse period of 620ms. This device also supports uncontrolled power-up, ProtectFET protection and fault reporting.

For Power On Reset (POR) block, it generates a reset signal as long as the power supply is below the internally-set threshold voltage or an external voltage or an external voltage input (VINB). The internal threshold voltage (VTH) can be set up to 36V by using a single external resistor. The reset indication pin (RST_IND) is used to indicate the state of the reset signal output. It also offers a master/slave configuration that allows two supervisors to operate as one, in order to monitor two voltages in the same system.

The LVD1 and UVD blocks detect low-voltage and under-voltage conditions with individual trip points and reset thresholds. For the LVD1 block, the trip point and reset thresholds can be externally set from –16V to –14V by using a single external resistor. The LVD2 and UVD thresholds can be set from +2.7V to +4.2V and –2V to –4V respectively.

The Hot Start Bond option on the 8212MSA/PR is a programmable switch that latches-on during power-up or reset indicating that the voltage is within the nominal value range. This prevents user initiated power-up when the external voltages are out of tolerance.

The OTD block monitors the temperature and will reset the system if the temperature crosses the factory set trip points (72°C). The status of the OTD can be checked by the TST pin.

The 8212MSA/PR offers a low false trip rate (LFT) because of its comparator OR topology. This ensures high system reliability. It also has ESD protection on its pins to withstand ESD strikes up to 8 kV. The 8212MSA/PR family is ideal for industrial and medical applications such as battery-backed applications, industrial automation and medical imaging systems. It is available in a space-saving 0.75mm height TDFN package (3mm x 3mm). There are other packages available like DFN10 and DFN6.
