Power management IC (PMIC) supervisors form a category of integrated circuits devoted to the task of measuring power supply, control power-on and power-off timing, protect against fault conditions and system failures, and controlling the reset of all kinds of circuits. The MAX8216CPD+ is an intelligent power-supply/reset supervisor with advanced protective features for helping to safeguard digital systems from hanging, overvoltage, and power-on transients. Designed to protect digital circuits from any fault conditions, this supervisor combines a power-on reset (POR) and battery backup switch in the same package to provide comprehensive power supply protection.

The MAX8216CPD+ includes a CMOS-compatible power-on reset (POR) circuit that forces the output low when the input power rises above a specified threshold and maintains it low for a predetermined time after power-on. When the power supply drops below the reset threshold, it pushes the output high. In addition, the MAX8216CPD+ also provides a battery switch that extends the duration of the reset output when the power supply degrades or fails. In this way, any circuitry dependent on the clean power supply is protected in cases of power failure or degradation.

The MAX8216CPD+ is a dual-out reset supervisor which offers two independent outputs to control two independent power supplies and two independent reset circuits. This feature protects two independent power domains providing different operating voltages so that the reset sequence can be tailored to each power supply. The reset pin configuration allows the MAX8216CPD+ to provide global reset during power-on and individual reset during power glitches or faults. This supervisor is ideal for dual-rail designs or for initiaizing systems that use multiple voltages for various components (e.g. general purpose microcontroller, DSP, or FPGA). The MAX8216CPD+ can also be used for resetting subsystems, upon power-on, to prevent them from initializing separately from the main circuit\'s power-on reset.

The MAX8216CPD+ also incorporates several safety features, such as overvoltage protection (OVP) to prevent any damage to the circuit due to overvoltage faults, and power-on/off sequencing to ensure correct sequencing of the power dependent system components. In addition, this supervisor can detect current drain on its own power supply and will initiate system shutdown if the current exceeds the specified limit. With a wide regard for system personalization and accuracy, the MAX8216CPD+ also comes equipped with a programmable reset time to ensure that different components in the system have the same reset output. This programmable reset time also allows dynamic reset to be used, prolonging reset only in the event of a power disturbance.

As a single-package device, the MAX8216CDP+ combines the protection of two power domains with the protection of applications requiring overvoltage, current, and temperature protection. With wide voltage operation and a wide temperature range (-40°C to +85°C), the MAX8216CPD+ is well-suited to a variety of applications, including battery-powered systems, mobile/wireless products, portable audio devices, digital devices, as well as precision instrumentation.
