One of the efficient power management ICs (Integrated Circuits) is the MAX845ESA+ from Maxim Integrated. Application Fields
The MAX845ESA+ is designed to solve the power management related issues which are arising in handheld and portable devices. Max845ESA+ is a dual-output step-down DC-DC converter which features high accuarcy over varied load and temperature conditions. It has the capability to provide high efficiency over a wide supply range thus, has become the preferred device for low-power applications. Due to its high power management capabilities, it finds its application in portable consumer electronics, medical devices, personal communicators, and cellphones.
It is a high efficiency DC-DC converter with regulated output voltage as low as 0.8V. It can achieve up to 95% efficiency when it is used in low power applications, at 3.2A current. To optimize the system cost, it has an internal current limit circuitry which enables it to saving external components cost. With the help of this integrated circuit the entire power supply solution can become cost efficient.
Working Principle
The MAX845ESA+ is a Step-down DC-DC converter with two outputs. It can source/sink current from both the outputs. It is enabled by switching two SEPIC converters, i.e., a step-down, step-up converter. Following is the working principle of MAX845ESA+.
The MAX845ESA+ has a simple 2 pin configuration, where a switch is connected in between two SEPIC stage. The SEPIC converter helps in reducing the ups and downs in the input voltage as compared to traditional step-down dc-dc converter. The SEPIC converter works on the principle of inductive energy transfer. On the left side of the switch, the active power that is the power in the input capacitor C1 and the power associated with the inductor L1 is stored. On the right side of the switch, the power that is the power associated with the inductor L2 and the capacitor C2 is stored. These two stages are connected in series thus, when the switch is activated one cycle of power transfer is completed.
It has two outputs, the output voltage can be set using two external resistors connected to the output pins. The output is regulated using the feedback circuitry, which senses the output voltage and adjusts the bias current to hold a constant output voltage. It also has an enable pin which can be used to switch on/off the output voltage. This eliminates the need of external switch and also reduces the overall power consumption.
The MAX845ESA+ consumes very low quiescent current, thus not affecting the battery life of the device. The device has a small package size and can fit into tighter places and the operating temperature range of -40 to +125 degree Celcius makes it suitable for various applications. It is designed for very low noise operation thus, it reduces the risk of electromagnetic interference to personal communication.
