Working Principle

The MAX8511EXK28+ is a low-dropout linear regulator with a fixed output voltage, an adjustable output current limit, and a minimum dropout voltage of 350mV at 2A. The MAX8511EXK28+ uses a P-channel MOSFET in the linear path to provide the low dropout voltage and a precise regulator output voltage.

At high input voltages, a low on-resistance P-channel MOSFET is used to drop most of the accumulated input voltage. At low input voltages, this MOSFET’s on-resistance is larger, which reduces the amount of current it delivers to the output. This technique is used to maintain a relatively constant output voltage over a wide input voltage range.

The MAX8511EXK28+ uses a series resistor-divider R1/R2 to monitor the output voltage and compares the voltage VOUT to the reference voltage VREF. The P-channel MOSFET is modulated by the error amplifier to adjust the voltage linearly with respect to the reference voltage.

An internal over-current protection prevents damage to the device due to overloading. When the output current exceeds the set current limit, the MAX8511EXK28+ shuts down the P-channel MOSFET, reducing the output voltage to the desired value.
