It implements a traditional non-switching linear regulator design, which uses a series pass element (transistor) to regulate the output voltage of the regulator. This series pass element is driven by two resistors (R1 and R2) connected between the output of the regulator and ground. The output voltage of the regulator is set by adjusting the two resistors. The MAX8557ETE+ also comes with an onboard 0.8V voltage reference, which is used in combination with the two resistors to set the output voltage of the regulator. The voltage reference is controlled by a bias current, which is set by the jumper “REFIN”.
