The device can also detect short circuits and overvoltages on the input, the battery, and the output, and can automatically cut the load current to protect the system.

The working principle of the MAX8685DETA+ can be summarised as follows. When a battery is connected to the device, the linear charger will attempt to charge the battery to the programmed voltage level. If the input voltage is high enough and is within the device’s range, then the DC-DC buck converter will be enabled and the device will output a regulated voltage. If the input voltage is too low or out of range, then the buck converter will automatically switch over to the linear charger. The device also monitors the battery voltage, current, and temperature levels. When the temperature exceeds the programmed threshold level, the device will automatically switch to the low-quiescent current boost converter and reduce the load power.

The MAX8685DETA+ PMIC from Maxim Integrated provides efficient power control and protection for battery-powered devices.
