PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear is a class of ICs that provide a regulated output voltage (Vo) from an input voltage (Vi). The MAX8878EUK28+ is a voltage regulator that operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V input supply and provides two regulated outputs of 0.8V to 5.0V. This device is optimized for low power applications with typically 0.9uA quiescent current in SHUTDOWN mode and 3.4uA in RUN mode. The MAX8878EUK28+ is characterized for operation from -40°C to +85°C.

The MAX8878EUK28+ integrates two linear regulators, an output tracking feature, and a selectable POWER-ON RESET generator into a 4x4mm QFN-28 package. The MAX8878EUK28+ is designed to promote high-efficiency, compact, and low-cost power supply solutions. It features: high power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of 92dB at 1kHz; 300mA output current for both regulators; wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V; low-dropout voltage (LDO) of 250mV at 150mA; and load-dependent output voltage-tracking capability.

The MAX8878EUK28+ also has other features such as thermal shutdown protection, under voltage lockout (UVLO), fast line/load transient response, active output discharge, soft-start, and selectable power-on reset (POR). The low-noise LDO has an adjustable output voltage range of 0.8V to 5.0V, with a maximum output current of 100mA, and requires no external components. It also has an internal voltage reference of 0.8V, a low-noise output, and a high PSRR of 92dB at 1kHz.

The MAX8878EUK28+ has a high-accuracy voltage-tracking feature that allows users to effectively monitor the output of the higher-voltage regulator. With this feature, the user can control the output voltage of the higher-voltage regulator by setting a corresponding voltage on the lower-voltage regulator. Furthermore, the device features a selectable power-on reset generator that generates a reset signal to the system if the main power supply fails. The device also has an internal thermal shutdown protection and under voltage lockout (UVLO) to ensure system safety under fault conditions.

The MAX8878EUK28+ combines two linear regulators, a selectable power-on reset, an integrated voltage reference, a voltage-tracking capability and a shutdown mode, all in one package, making it a suitable solution for applications such as intermediate-bus Power-over-Ethernet, point-of-load regulation and high-efficiency buck-boost control. By integrating the two linear regulators, the MAX8878EUK28+ significantly reduces board space and the overall cost of the system, while providing the user with a reliable, low-power solution.
