The MAX9217ETM+ is an advanced dual serializer/deserializer (SerDes) for data rates up to 3.2 Gb/s for lower-cost, lower-power, highly dense system designs. A single device provides two independent SERDES channels, selectable between LVDS and CML families, with redundant clock support and integrated channel multiplexers. Working Principle

The MAX9217ETM+ provides a flexible and robust architecture for designing serialization and deserialization applications. It has a highly-integrated architecture to reduce the number of external components needed to build complex SerDes systems. It combines two independent SERDES blocks, two integrated multiplexers, and an integrated PLL to provide a total of four differential I/O channels that can operate in both LVDS and CML mode.

Each SERDES block consists of a low-power, high-efficiency differential amplifier, four low-noise clock buffers, and a low-power 0.18 µm CMOS preamplifier and lane-detect logic. The preamplifier and lane detect logic are connected to two differential clocks, which are then connected to each SERDES block. The clock buffers are programmed to drive a desired clock frequency for each lane to ensure successful data transmission.

The integrated multiplexers allow the MAX9217ETM+ to automatically switch between LVDS and CML modes in order to adapt to different data bus formats. The MAX9217ETM+ also includes a high performance PLL that eliminates the need for an external oscillator. The PLL operates at a frequency of up to 432 MHz and is able to generate four independent clock outputs for each SERDES channel.
