Interface - Serializers, Deserializers
Serializers and deserializers are some of the most utilized devices found in any digital system. They achieve their task by taking in parallel data and outputting it in a serialized stream. The MAX9220EUM-T is an ESD (electrostatic discharge) protected advanced serializer-deserializer designed to interface between high speed parallel circuits and de-multiplexed serial communication systems. The device integrates functions such as interleaving, buffering, and serial handling, while allowing more efficient transmission of clock-synchronous parallel data.
Features
- ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection up to ±4kV.
- Input latency buffer for up to 16 parallel data signals.
- Up to 32-bit serial data.
- Parallel data is transmitted as 5-bit groups in 0/90-degree phase mode.
- Operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C.
Applications
The MAX9220EUM-T is ideal for any applications where fast conversion from parallel to serial data and vice versa is needed. Common applications include LCD TVs, LCD panels, interface boards, monitors and projectors.
Working Principle and Timing
The serializer-deserializer performs its task using parallel-to-serial conversion and serial-to-parallel conversion. Each of these operations has its own timing requirements. For parallel-to-serial conversion, the MAX9220EUM-T will convert up to 16 parallel data inputs into 32-bit words. The input data is clocked at up to 41 MHz and aligned to form a single 32-bit word. The serial word (SR/SCRD) is then output in a 0/90-degree phase mode. For serial-to-parallel conversion, the MAX9220EUM-T will take in up to 32-bit words and convert them into 16 parallel data outputs. The serial data is first buffered using a serial latency buffer. The data is then converted into a 32-bit parallel word and clocked internally at 41 MHz. Finally, the data is de-multiplexed into 16 parallel outputs.
Conclusion
The MAX9220EUM-T serializer-deserializer provides an effective way to interface between high speed parallel devices and serial communication systems. It offers ESD protection, data buffering and other features that make it attractive for use in LCD TVs, LCD panels, interface boards, monitors and projectors.
