A serializer-deserializer or S-D, serializer-de-muxer (SDM), or serializer-multiplexer-demultiplexer (SMSD), can translate multiple protocols and act as a bridge between communication systems. The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB is a single chip solution for audio/video, gigabit Ethernet, and time division multiplexing applications.
The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB has a unique patent-pending architecture that works in harmony with the rising popularity of digital signals in the consumer electronics industry. It combines an 8-bit serializer and 8-bit deserializer with a separate time division multiplexer to provide bidirectional transmission of up to four channels of audio/video (A/V) and gigabit Ethernet data. Additionally, the MAX9248ECM/V+TGB provides bidirectional RS-232 and dualport memory interface control.
The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB\'s serializer/deserializer combo is well suited for applications requiring a bridge between digital video formats via wide-area network (WAN) or local-area networks (LAN). This can be especially important for applications such as video-on-demand (VOD) delivery, broadcast, and IPTV. Additionally, the MAX9248ECM/V+TGB has the capability to decode time division multiplex (TDM) formats for high density video streams.
The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB\'s serialization/deserialization process is based on a technique called Time Domain Multiplexing (TDM). This technique uses multiple serial data streams to simultaneously transmit multiplexed frames of data. The serializer converts parallel data into a serialized data stream while the deserializer reconverts the data back into parallel format. By using multiple serial data streams, this protocol allows for the simultaneous transmission of multiple channels of A/V and Ethernet data.
The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB has three distinct operating modes: serialized signal mode, TDM mode and streaming mode. In serialized signal mode, the MAX9248ECM/V+TGB can receive multiple HDMI, Ethernet and TDM encoded A/V streams parallel streams. TDM mode allows for the reception of multiple TDM streams and streaming mode enables the simultaneous transmission of multiple A/V and Ethernet data frames.
The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB has a number of features which make it an ideal solution for A/V and Ethernet applications. It supports both single-link and dual-link HDMI, is capable of 50 Gbps of data throughput, and has adjustable equalization and pre-emphasis settings. Additionally, time domain synchronization and calibration are provided to ensure error-free operation. The MAX9248ECM/V+TGB\'s selectable output power is adjustable for optimum performance in a variety of applications.
