The MAX9485EUP+T from Maxim Integrated is a Low-Jitter, Low-Power, Industrial-Grade Clock Generator with Serial I/O Control. It provides a low-jitter clock output in a variety of output formats and is suitable for industrial and networking applications. The MAX9485EUP+T features a high-performance, low-jitter, synthesizable output jitter of less than 2ps and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
The MAX9485EUP+T is designed to generate standard output frequencies such as 25MHz, 50MHz, and 100MHz, up to 160MHz using a low-jitter target frequency. It also provides a range of external clock and reset inputs to increase flexibility and control. Lastly, the MAX9485EUP+T can be controlled via a serial port allowing engineers to adjust and select different output frequencies.

The working principle of MAX9485EUP+T is based on the availability of two different reference clock sources, the unit has a choice of PLL or Integer-N operation modes. The PLL synthesized clock provides an output frequency that is a multiple of the reference frequency, while the Integer-N mode provides an absolute output frequency. Depending on the requirements, different operating modes can be selected to provide the best performance for the application.
In the PLL mode, the unit operates as a VCO and is programmed to provide the optimal jitter performance. The unit provides an output frequency that is the reference frequency multiplied by the feedback value (FbK) multiplied by the feedback divider (FbDI) value. By changing the feedback divider value it is possible to change the output frequency from the reference frequency.
In the Integer-N mode, the PLL is bypassed and the output frequency is given as an absolute frequency. The output frequency can be programmed by changing the control word. Depending on the requirements different step sizes can be generated for the same reference frequency.
The MAX9485EUP+T has a very low power consumption and offers multiple power down modes to reduce current consumption. In the power down mode, the core is powered down while the outputs remain powered. If the outputs are not needed, they can be powered down to reduce power consumption.
The MAX9485EUP+T is an excellent solution for applications that require low power consumption, reliable jitter performance, and excellent noise suppression.
