MC33074DR2G is a fast-switching dual voltage comparator device designed to facilitate the design of electronic circuits where relatively small voltage signals require precise comparison and/or upper/lower limits detection. The device serves a wide range of application fields including instrumentation, test and measurement, audio, consumer, automotive, and other high-performance applications such as precision CMOS logic.The MC33074DR2G has two separate analog inputs. The negative input (INL-) is connected to the noninverting input amplifier, while the positive input (INL+) is connected to the inverting input amplifier. As conventional in comparators, the output (OUT) is the result of the comparison process between the voltage at the two inputs. The comparison process can be described as a voltage difference detector; when the voltage at the two inputs (INL+ and INL-) are the same, the output is a logic low level; when the voltage at INL+ is greater than the voltage at INL-, then the output is at logic high level.Applications in which this device could be particularly useful include circuit design for precision analog to digital converters, detection/measurement of small voltage signals, peak detection and other low-level instrumentation circuitry.In terms of its working principle, the MC33074DR2G is essentially a gated buffer amplifier, using the differential inputs to compare the two voltages and then setting the output depending on the result. When the voltage at the non-inverting input (INL+) is lower than the voltage at the inverting input (INL-), the output will be low (logic 0). When the voltage at the non-inverting input is higher than the voltage at the inverting input, the output will be high (logic 1). The outputs remain in their respective states until the inputs exceed the hysteresis value.The device also offers several useful features such as low-power CMOS operation, low-noise operation and rail-to-rail common-mode voltage capability. The rail-to-rail common-mode input range allows the MC33074DR2G to compare very small signals (50 nV peak-to-peak) and is especially useful in low-level signal processing circuits. The input signals can be amplified to the required level either by an internal amplifier or by an external amplifier.Other features of the MC33074DR2G include its fast switching speed, extended temperature range operation (specifications remain valid from -40°C to +85°C) and wide supply voltage range (2.7V to 10V).
