IntroductionThe MCD224-22IO1 is an integrated, solid-state, dynamic thyristor switching system module used in applications requiring high-efficiency, high power-density and low on-state power dissipation. It is ideal for applications such as solid-state motor drives and various high-current-control applications.What is a Thyristor Module?A thyristor module is an electronic device featuring multiple thyristors. It is a package or integrated circuit made up of several thyristors connected in series, parallel or both. This package or IC takes advantage of the individual switching characteristics of the isolated thyristors and provides a more efficient solution for high-power applications than the single thyristor can provide.Working Principle of the MCD224-22IO1The MCD224-22IO1 is based on a solid-state, dynamic commutation method and works in two phases—a latch phase and a dynamic drive phase. During the latch phase, the device latches in the on state and draws a constant current (Latch I) through the gate. In the dynamic drive phase, the module cross-conditions the thyristor terminals and then draws a higher current in short pulses (Dynamic I) to reduce the voltage drop across the thyristor and improve the thyristor current and power characteristics. The module is designed to work with a positive voltage greater than the maximum power voltage across the thyristor. The module is triggered by a positive Volt-Amp signal at the gate that can be generated by a variety of microprocessors, DSPs and other control units. When this signal is applied, a dynamic current pulse is injected into the gate and the thyristor is rapidly turned on, preventing arcing and good dynamic response. The module provides an electronic current trip that automatically turns off the thyristor when the current reaches a predefined level or interval.Application Field of the MCD224-22IO1The MCD224-22IO1 module is designed to work with a wide range of Thyristor main current designs, ranging from 100Adc to 600Adc. The module can be applied in motor drives, power electronics systems, AC drives, industrial automation, welding machines, and other high-power current control applications.
