When the voltage is below a certain threshold, the layer of depletion regions will prevent any current from flowing. When the applied voltage exceeds the specified threshold, the layer of depletion regions will collapse and the forward-biased PN junction will allow the current to flow.The MCD500-12IO1 uses this principle in an efficient manner for setting a wide range of current and voltage levels in its outputs.
