MCP1631V-E/ST is a mid-voltage, low-side synchronous rectification DC-DC step down controller. It can be applied in a wide range of Converter applications that require high frequency, high-efficiency, small size and user friendly control algorithms. This device offers Precision control and regulated power with Ultrasoft-MOSFET technology. The MCP1631V-E/ST has a 1.3MHz current mode control with internal power on features, full protection features such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-temperature protection (OTP). It also provides adjustable voltage soft-start and adjustable operating frequency. The MCP1631V-E/ST is available in a variety of packages in order to fit different applications.

MCP1631V-E/ST is particularly suitable for microprocessor related applications such as memory buffering and 12V pre-regulation. Working Principle
MCP1631V-E/ST operates in current mode control, which provides excellent line and load regulation compared with voltage mode control. The device features a current mode control PWM architecture with internal power on features, full protection features such as under-voltage lockout (UVLO) and over-temperature protection (OTP), adjustable voltage soft-start and adjustable operating frequency.
When the MCP1631V-E/ST is powered up, the start up circuit sets the voltage across the RT pin at the PWM comparator inside the MCP1631V-E/ST to 1.55V. This voltage is lower than the threshold voltage of the PWM comparator, so the PWM output is low. This is addressed as “power on” phase. During this phase, the voltage at the RT pin is increasing slowly up to 2.4V due to the internal reference that sets the MCP1631V-E/ST in “on” state.
When the voltage at the RT pin reaches the 2.4V threshold, the PWM output of the MCP1631V-E/ST controller turns “on” and the power switch is turned on. The voltage at the output of the power switch is then applied to the output filter which gives the power supply output voltage. This process will continue until the voltage at the output of the power switch reaches the set point of the voltage feedback voltage.
When the load current is changing, the current information is sent to the control logic of the MCP1631V-E/ST through a current sense transformer. The control logic will then use the current sense signal to adjust the PWM duty cycle so that the output voltage remains the same even when the load current is changed.
When the output voltage reaches the set point, the PWM output of the MCP1631V-E/ST controller is adjusted so that the output of the power switch is at a constant voltage level. With the constant voltage level, the output of the power switch can be regulated to provide a very accurate output voltage.
To protect the MCP1631V-E/ST and the system, it has features such as over-temperature protection (OTP), over-current protection (OCP) and under-voltage lockout (UVLO). When these features are triggered, the output of the power switch is forced to turn off and the output voltage is reduced to the output under voltage lock out level.
The MCP1631V-E/ST is a highly efficient, high frequency synchronous rectification DC-DC step down controller with user friendly features. It provides extremely precise voltage control for a wide range of applications, and is the ideal solution for a variety of step down converters.
