Application Field and Working Principle
The MCP19118-E/MJVAO device is a DC-DC switching mode converter suitable for a variety of applications, such as Step-Down Power Supplies, Voltage Regulation, Active Balancing and Current Sharing. It operates by converting an input voltage to a user-selectable output voltage, while still performing Power System Management tasks. In the case of voltage regulation, the device regulates the output voltage by sensing the output current, then adjusting the Duty Cycle of the Switching Modules. The Duty Cycle of the Switching Modules is adjusted by comparing the sensed voltage of the output voltage with a reference voltage; this is the principle by which the device is able to regulate the output voltage.
The MCP19118-E/MJVAO step-down controller also offers Active Balancing. Active Balancing is used to ensure that the level of current drawn from each of the DC-DC converter switch arms is balanced; i.e. the output current does not vary significantly between the Arms. This is essential for sustaining an even output voltage; otherwise, the output voltage could be disrupted by an imbalance. The Active Balancing function works by monitoring the current values from the two switch arms and adjusting the duty cycle of each switch arm appropriately. The integration of this feature ensures that the output voltage is regulated and in balance.
The MCP19118-E/MJVAO also supports current sharing, which is useful for distributed power systems. Current sharing is implemented by comparing the voltage of the feedback resistors of the two switch arms, and adjusting the duty cycles of the respective switch arms so that the currents are balanced.
