I/O Expanders, such as the MCP23017-E/SO, are integrated circuits (ICs) used in embedded interface applications. Working Principle

The MCP23017-E/SO is a 16-bit I/O expander that uses the I2C bus for communication with the host processor. It has two general purpose I/O (GPIO) banks with 8 GPIO pins each, as well as an interrupt pin (INTP) and an enable/disable pin (EN).

The GPIO pins can be configured to operate in either input or output mode via the I2C bus. The output mode supports push-pull, open-drain, and Schmitt trigger operation. In addition, each GPIO pin also has a configurable pull-up or pull-down resistor.

Inputs are sampled at a frequency of 8kHz with a programmable filter duration. Interrupts can be generated on either a rising edge, falling edge, or low level on any input pin. Interrupts can also be used to generate wakeup signals on the host processor.

The enable/disable pin (EN) can be used to power down the IC while retaining the state of the configuration registers and the GPIO pin states. This pin can also be used as a reset line to reset the IC to its default state.

The MCP23017-E/SO is available in a compact 28 pin SSOP (Small Outline) package and operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
