An opto-isolator, also known as an opto-coupler, photo-coupler or an optical isolator, is a device that transfers electrical signals between two isolated circuits, while blocking the unwanted passage of other electrical or optoelectronic signals. The MCT611S is a three terminal opto-isolator consisting of a photodiode optically coupled to a transistor. It’s used for photocoupling an AC or DC control signal, to drive a load in either a low level or a high level output application. The lead frame also connects both the emitter and the collector of the output transistor to separate terminals of the opto-isolator. The first terminal is the output, called ‘Vout’, and the other terminal is the ground, called ‘GND’.

The operating principle of the MCT611S is quite simple. An AC or DC control signal is input to the photodiode of the opto-component, creating a current that forces the output IC’s collector to become saturated, and thus keeping the output device off. When the input control signal increases, a corresponding current is generated, which flows through the photodiode and the emitter of the output IC, forcing the output device into full conduction. Since the photodiode is optically coupled, the input and output circuits are electrically isolated. The photodiode is made from a doped semiconductor substrate, and has a current sensitivity range of approximately 1 to 100 mA/V.
