It consists of three ports, an input port, an output port and a reference port which modulates the frequency of the input signal injected in the instrument. The reference port is for supplying a stable local oscillator signal or as a reference signal source for the mixer’s input. The signal from the input port is combined with the stable reference signal or the local oscillator signal at the mixing junction. The signal from the local oscillator is modulated by the input signal, resulting in the generation of a new signal with the same frequency as that of the input signal.
