MEDHT7364NA1 Application Field and Working Principle

The MEDHT7364NA1 is a motor driver board from Texas Instruments designed for controlling off-board three-phase brushless DC motors. It features an on-board 32-bit Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontroller and a number of control inputs, including Hall Effect sensors, reed switches, and encoder inputs. The driver is also capable of providing both open-loop and closed-loop control to provide both speed and positioning control. It is capable of supplying up to 40A peak current, and is able to drive a three-phase brushless DC motor up to 80V and up to 500W.

Working Principle

The MEDHT7364NA1 motor driver board works by using Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) to control the speed and position of the brushless DC motor. PWM is a digital signal-based technique for controlling electrical devices, such as motors, actuators, and solenoids. It uses a series of regular, evenly spaced pulses of variable width, to control the power applied to the motor. By varying the width of the pulses the speed and torque of the motor can be controlled. Additionally, the board also features a Current Sense (CS) circuit which measures motor winding current and is used for over-current protection.

The MEDHT7364NA1 is capable of providing both open and closed-loop control. In open-loop control the board is configured to provide only speed control with no feedback from the motor. In closed-loop control the board is able to provide both speed and position control. The board is also capable of providing encoder and Hall Effect sensor feedback for monitoring motor speed, position, direction, stall, etc.
