The MIC2168BMM is a high voltage, high performance, DC/DC step-up/synchronous switching controller IC with Schottky diode, that provides a solution for digital display backlighting, automotive lighting, and other point-of-load (POL) applications. This device can drive either an external N-channel MOSFET or an external Schottky Diode.

The MIC2168BMM is a high-performance, wide-input voltage range, DC/DC switching controller with a low stand-by power mode (< 500 μA). This IC also includes output voltage and current monitoring and integrated short-circuit protection feature.

The device features a high-resolution, automatic pulse-width modulation (PWM) buck pre-regulation topology. This ensures that average input voltage is regulated to a lower level than the peak input voltage. This topology also produces low output ripple, as well as improved thermal efficiency, resulting in less heat generated in the external circuitry.

The MIC2168BMM has a wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 35V and can support a maximum output voltage of 50V. The device can provide currents up to 10A and is available in a Pb-free 16-pin QFN package.

Working Principle

The MIC2168BMM operates by setting two reference voltages (VIREF and VREF) that directly control the output voltage and current. The output voltage (VOUT) is determined by the difference between the two references, typically set to reference a lower average input voltage than the peak input voltage.

The device then utilizes a high-resolution PWM buck pre-regulator topology to intelligently vary the duty cycle of the drivers in order to maintain output voltage accuracy and current regulation. This topology results in high efficiency, low output ripple, and improved thermal efficiency.

The device also includes a SenseFET configuration which monitors current, as well as a timer for short-circuit protection. The MIC2168BMM also includes a Low Stand-by Power Mode (< 500 μA) which enables to reduce overall system power consumption when the device is not being used.
