At its core, the MIC3201YME is a buck-type or switching regulator that is configured to output the required current to its load. It works by taking in an input voltage and then regulating its output to the required current or voltage. This is achieved through PWM control, whereby the time that the current is enabled is assumed to be a percentage of the total time, which then translates to an output current or voltage proportional to the percentage of time during which the current is enabled. As a result the axis at this device is controlled by the magnitude of an external current-sense resistor, which defines the total load current. The remaining parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature are monitored internally. This data is then used to control the internal FET switch, allowing the device to regulate the output voltage of the external LEDs. The MIC3201YME also offers a soft start feature to prevent inrush currents and damages resulting from sudden large currents flowing through the LED. It offers a wide buck conversion range from 8V to 40V, and is also equipped with various protection features to ensure safe operation including a UVLO protection, over-voltage protection, a thermal shutdown function, and current limit protection.In summary, the MIC3201YME from Rohm Semiconductor is an LED driver PMIC with features suitable for a wide range of LED lighting applications.
