PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers

The MIC38HC44-1BN is a microprocessor-controlled tap-selectable secondary-side-controlled offline AC/DC switching power supply controller IC. It integrates a MPU controller core, comprehensive protection functions, and an integrated temperature sensor. The primary side is based on a zero-voltage or zero-current switching topology. By combining these features, the MIC38HC44-1BN is ideal for designers who are looking for easy to design, cost-effective solution to provide high-efficiency, low total harmonic distortion, and low-noise AC/DC power supplies.The MIC38HC44-1BN integrates numerous features on one single chip. This device is comprised of a primary side control, a secondary side synchronous factor correction control, a DO (Protection) pin, a CS (latch shut-off) pin, a TAP pin and a NTC sensing interface. With its zero-voltage or zero-current primary side switching technology and its fractional calculation of switch current ratio, the MIC38HC44-1BN can improve the overall power efficiency of any AC/DC converters, especially in applications where the height of component density is a chief concern.The working principle of the MIC38HC44-1BN is simple and straightforward. The primary side consists of an active switch (Q1) and a secondary side rectifier (D1-D4). The integrated MPU controller core helps to control the switch timing, based on the feedback from the secondary side synchronous factor correction control and the NTC sensing interface. When the switch is turned on, a voltage is applied across D1-D4 and current flows through the primary winding of the transformer and the windings of the secondary rectifier. The voltage developed across the rectifier is then regulated through the integrated PWM controller and feedback circuitry.The DO (Protection) pin of the device monitors current, voltage and temperature conditions, and then informs the primary side circuit if an overcurrent, over voltage, or over temperature condition is detected. If any of these conditions occur, the device automatically turns off Q1 to shut down the entire power supply. The CS (Latch Shutoff) pin disables the reset operation and provides a latching action to inhibit restart after a shutoff has been triggered. After a fault is removed, the device must be manually reset or the power must be recycled.The TAP pin allows designers to choose different tap points for specific AC input conditions. By doing so, the device ensures steady-state performance and operate in different regions with different AC line voltages.Overall, the MIC38HC44-1BN is an innovative and cost-effective solution to provide a high-efficiency and low-noise AC/DC power supplies with a fractional current-ratio control.
