The MIC39152WU is a low dropout adjustable regulator from ON Semiconductor. Designed to replace the conventional two-component regulator system with a single package insulated transistor, this regulator has been used in many applications in recent years. It is classified as an adjustable linear regulator in the category of PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits).

This discrete device has been designed to achieve a minimum dropout voltage of a mere 1.2 V across a wide-range of input voltages; ranging from 2.25 V to 14 V. When the input voltage is applied to the VIN terminal, the voltage will be adjusted such that the voltage at VOUT is equal to the voltage programmed at VREFL terminal. It is also possible to adjust VOUT to a particular voltage by programming the desired voltage at the VREFL pin.

When the voltage present at VIN exceeds the programmed output voltage, the difference is regulated by current flowing at the output. The current then causes voltage drop across the internal resistance which is equal to the difference between the input voltage and the programmed output voltage. This drop in voltage is also known as dropout voltage and its magnitude is a function of the function of the load current. The higher the load current, the higher the drop out voltage. This means that a large load current can cause a significant of drop in the output voltage, thus it is important to ensure that the input voltage remains slightly higher than the output voltage at all times.

To ensure stability with transient loads, it is important to use an adequate output capacitor in your circuit. The capacitor also helps to reduce sudden drop in output voltage due to transients in the load current. A typical output capacitor value for the MIC39152WU is 10uF. The capacitor should also be chosen such that it has an ESR (equivalent series resistance) value that matches with the value of the output resistance of the regulator.
