The MIKROE-439 is an evaluation board suited for in-depth studying of the main features of the DTMF receiver MT8870. This board provides an environment to put the MT8870 ready for operation with just four external connections. The MIKROE-439 includes an internal coupling system and on-board circuitry to reduce the number of external components and simplify the board assembly process.

The MIKROE-439 is one of the many expansion boards available from MikroElektronika. It is suited for use in combination with a select number of microcontroller boards and other boards, giving a programmer access to a wide range of applications. It gives engineers and developers a window of opportunity to create, innovatively design, optimally refine, and then demonstrate or deploy complex applications.

The main functionality and principle of operation of the MIKROE-439 can be summarized as follows. The board is equipped with all the necessary components for the reception and recognition of tones. It is configured as a StandAlone solution, allowing it to work as a totally independent DTMF receiver, powered by a 9V battery. It features an on-board regulated power supply, with the external 9V supply stepping down the voltage and regulating it to 6V. The MIKROE-439 features two connectors, where the user can connect an external microphone or telephone line. Its MT8870 DTMF decoder IC is interfaced with a microcontroller in order to extract and interpret commands.

The MIKROE-439 offers connection points for regulated power, as well as pinouts for keyboard input, microphone input, volume line-level input, and data output. The volume control input is used to adjust the volume of input signal. The MIC connector pinouts provide connection to a microphone or other external audio sources. The MT8870 DTMF decoder IC is an integrated circuit designed to accept an input signal and extract the DTMF tones from it. This IC contains the necessary hardware for the conversion of the analog input signal into digital output codes. This output code contains the information about the incoming tone (timing information and the tone\'s ID). The MT8870 also has a line-level input which allows the user to adjust the volume before the signal goes into the IC. This is often used to make the input signal more consistent across all frequencies of tones that the MT8870 recognizes.
