The MMBD301LT3 is a small signal, surface mount Silicon Zener diode and is commonly used in RF applications. The device has a reverse voltage of 300V, forward current of 175mA and a power dissipation of 400mW. The device is suitable for applications such as ESD protection, RF/IF, radio line-of-sight links, cable TV, data communication, wireless communications and other consumer electronic products.

The working principle of the MMBD301LT3 is as follows; when a current is applied to the anode of the diode, the voltage at the anode rises and a number of electrons are injected from the anode into the p-type material. This causes a number of holes to be left in the anode and increases the number of electrons in the p-type material. As the voltage continues to rise, the electrons in the p-type material move towards the anode, leaving some behind in the n-type material. This creates a depletion region at the anode. When the voltage reaches the Zener voltage level, the depletion region reaches its peak, causing an avalanche breakdown and setting up an electric field near the junction which further divides the electron and hole populations. The device is then in breakdown mode, allowing current to flow in the reverse direction.

The MMBD301LT3 is an extremely useful RF device and is used in many different applications.
