Working Principle:

A Zener diode works similarly to a standard diode, however it is specially designed to be able to withstand higher forward or reverse voltages. The MMSZ5227B-7-F is a single Zener diode, which works by allowing current to flow from the anode (positive) to the cathode(negative) when a voltage is applied in the forward direction. This current is then limited by the built-in Zener breakdown voltage. When a reverse bias is applied, a strong electric field is created between the anode and cathode, which causes the current to be forced to flow from the cathode to the anode. This current flow through the diode is known as reverse breakdown voltage, and is what makes the diode important for use as protection device.
