Crystals
Crystals are a type of solid-state oscillator, or components used for the timing and synchronization of electronic devices and equipment. Oscillators produce alternating current (AC) signals at a specific frequency range. Crystals, such as the MP049A, can be used as both timebases and oscillators, depending on the application and desired features.
The MP049A is a Rectangular Crystal Oscillator designed to operate from 8 - 293.75 MHz with very low drive and excellent frequency stability. It is a low cost and reliable solution and ideal substitute for quartz crystals.
The MP049A is a hermetically sealed, two-terminal crystal oscillator with an applied voltage input and a signal output. The oscillator utilizes a thin quartz crystal plate sealed within a metal can. It is mainly used for time bases and bit clock applications in telecommunications, LANs, networks, data storage and other digital circuits. The MP049A can also be used as an oscillator in frequency standards, controllers and VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators).
The MP049A works by utilizing the resonant frequency of an electrical circuit consisting of the crystal, two capacitors, two stabilizing resistors and two stationary electrodes. An AC voltage is applied to the crystal, causing the piezoelectric effect in which compression and expansion stresses resulting from the applied voltage cause the crystal to oscillate at a certain rate depending on the geometry, size and type of crystal used. This AC signal is then rectified and amplified into an output DC signal. The output voltage and frequency are determined by the geometry of the crystal and the size of the capacitors.
The MP049A is designed for very low dissipation and uniform performance over temperature with excellent frequency stability for either high or low temperature applications. This oscillator can be operated within a tight frequency range due to the superior temperature characteristics and integrated circuitry. The package size of the MP049A ranges from 14 mm x 14 mm up to 47 mm x 47 mm. It is available in an industry standard TTL or ECL package to facilitate the integration into existing system designs.
The MP049A is an ideal solution for many timing applications requiring the accurate — and cost-effective — synchronization of circuits. It is a reliable quartz oscillator with a wide frequency range and excels in critical applications where stability and temperature range are a must.
