MP2116DQ-LF-Z (MP2116 hereafter) is a compact, high-performance and low-cost synchronous step-down converter. It offers an integrated, high-efficiency and high accuracy solution that supports a wide input voltage range of 4.5V - 18V and an adjustable, programmable output voltage range of 0.6V - 16V. MP2116 is designed to operate at load currents up to 3A with efficiencies of up to 95% and line/load regulation of ±0.5%. As a PMIC Voltage Regulator, it primarily consists of Linear Regulators and Switching Regulators.

The Linear Regulators of MP2116 operates in Buck Mode and the duty cycle of its switching regulator is maintained at 50%. The output voltage is determined by an external voltage divider. A high-side driver is built into the MP2116 for enhanced performance, reliability and accuracy. When converting an unregulated input voltage to a regulated output voltage, the Linear Buck Mode Regulator reduces the input voltage to an intermediate regulated voltage. This regulated intermediate voltage is then used to drive the MOSFET switch of the switching regulator, which further reduces it to the desired output voltage.

The switching regulator has a fixed frequency of 1MHz, allowing high-current applications to be operated efficiently at higher frequencies than those with linear regulators. The maximum inductor current and requiring the use of minimum switch current sense resistors is also generated by the switching regulator. By adjusting the external voltage divider, the output voltage can be adjusted simply and accurately over the entire 0.6V to 16V range.

The MP2116 also provides an adjustable soft-start to reduce the inrush current at startup. Furthermore, it has a built-in thermal shutdown that protects the device from excessive temperatures. It also offers an output over-voltage protection to prevent any damage due to overload conditions. An under-voltage lockout function is also provided to support the system with inputs below the designed operating voltage.
