Diodes - Bridge Rectifiers

The MP501-BP is a bridge rectifier diode module of the premier High Voltage bridge rectifier diode category. The MP501-BP is designed to withstand voltages of up to 1000V and currents up to 6A. The bridge rectifier diode module consists of four diodes connected in a bridge circuit. A bridge rectifier has four diodes in the circuit, arranged in a symmetrical diamond shape so that two diodes conduct at the same time and two diodes are reverse biased, making it more efficient than a single-diode rectifier.

The primary application of bridge rectifier diodes is to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) in power supplies. The rectifier is connected in series with the primary winding of the power transformer and performs the role of a one-way valve by allowing the current to enter but not exit the transformer. Working Principle

Bridge rectifier diodes are made of a semiconductor material such as silicon or germanium that has two connections, an anode and a cathode. When connected to an AC power source, the polarity of the anode to the cathode in each diode changes depending on the half-cycle. When the voltage is positive, current flows through the diode and the device is forward biased. When the voltage is negative, current does not flow and the device is reverse biased.

The bridge rectifiers are then connected in a circuit in a bridge configuration with two diodes conducting on each half-cycle of the input AC voltage. This creates a complete path for current to flow in both directions, allowing the current to be easily rectified from AC to DC. The rectified voltage is then filtered through capacitors to create a smoother DC voltage.
