Working principleThe MSL2161DQ is a constant current linear topology LED driver designed to provide high power and constant current in a cost-effective solution. The MSL2161DQ is capable of controlling multiple LEDs connected in series without the need for specialized circuitry processing. Ideally, the circuit features a transconductance amplifier which provides constant current control with a low residual ripple on the output.
The circuit also utilizes a MOSFET ( Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) to switch the LEDs on and off and to regulate the supply voltage. The switching MOSFET has an on resistance (RDS(on)) of 3.3Ω, allowing the driver to dissipate only low amounts of power in the form of heat.
The current controlled output provided by the MSL2161DQ allows the operating parameters of the LED to be set accurately. This minimizes LED power consumption and ensures maximum LED lifetime. Additionally, the IC features a soft-start current which helps to reduce inrush current.
