Toggle switches are electronic switches typically used in low power applications below 10A and 250V AC. When opened or closed, a toggle switch provides an audible click sound and the activated state of the switch can easily be determined by the different height of the toggle lever. In comparison with rotary and slide switches, a toggle switch has higher switching frequency, long life expectancy and larger contact gap.

The MTA206SA is a classic example of the most popular of all toggle switches. This single pole double throw (SPDT) type switch is rated for up to 15A, 250V AC and features moulded plastic construction with screw terminals. It has two contacts which can be used as either On-On or On-Off-On depending on the chosen wiring configuration. The MTA206SA has a simple working principle. An internal spring mounted toggle lever bears against a precisely formed contact cup when the switch is in the ‘Off’ configuration. When the lever is moved to ‘On’, the contact cup is lifted away from the contact plate allowing electricity to flow. The toggle lever is designed to remain in position after the electrical connection has been made and the switch will retain its activated position until the lever is manually reset.

In order to ensure long life expectancy and safe operation, the MTA206SA has been designed with a number of built in safety features. These include a positive inner gap between the contact pad and the contact surface, which helps prevent arcing during switching. The contact assembly also features a self-cleaning function which reduces dust and other foreign objects from gathering between the contacts. The toggle lever is mounted on a shield which can be used to prevent accidental activation and protect the switch from tampering.
