Thermal Cutoffs (Thermal Fuses) Thermal cutoffs (also known as thermal fuses) are thermal protections that limit electrical current used in the operation of electrical components and devices. They use a bimetallic strip that contains metal alloys that respond to changes in temperature by expanding or contracting. As the device starts to heat up, the strip’s physical contact is broken, which interrupts the flow of current and cuts the power.A perfect example of this technology is the MTS1 S125 Series Thermal Cutoff, or “Thermal Fuse.” This device is a surface-mount thermal cutoff that provides over-temperature protection in enclosures with temperature critical components, as well as many other applications. It is ideal for applications such as consumer electronics, medical devices, communications, and automotive. The MTS1 S125 is able to reduce the temperature of components quickly while minimizing the risk of false trips. It is composed of a thermostatically-controlled solid state thermal switch mounted on a ceramic base with a solderable gold finish. The thermal switch has a normally-closed (NC) setpoint of 75°C with a trip time of 4 minutes.The MTS1 S125 is easy to install and requires no additional circuitry. Simply solder the device to a circuit board. Once the device is attached, the thermostatically controlled thermal switch does the rest, responding quickly to changes in temperature. To understand how the MTS1 S125 works, we must first understand the working principle of a thermal cutoff. This device consists of a thermostat, which is a bimetal made up of two different metals with different characteristics. The metals will expand and contract in different proportions in response to temperature changes. Thanks to this, the bimetal can be bent to open and close at a specific temperature.When the specified temperature is exceeded, the bimetal expands, breaking its physical contact and thus disconnecting the power supply. At this point, the device cannot be reused. It must be replaced with a new one.The MTS1 S125 works the same way, with the added benefit of being easier to install and cheaper than alternatives. During the over-temperature condition, the contact opens and interrupts the current. Once the temperature has returned to normal, the contact closes again, and the device is once again operational. Overall, Thermal Cutoffs (Thermal Fuses) like the MTS1 S125 are an incredibly useful and cost-effective way to provide temperature critical protection for electrical components and devices.
