Power Line Filter Modules are electronic devices that are integrated into power line networks to reduce or eliminate noise disturbances in the power signature. They provide an effective way of coupling noise signals out of the power line or supply. The MX13050 is a power line filter module that is designed to filter digital signals on power lines. The MX13050 is an integrated circuit designed specifically for AC power line noise filtering applications, typically used to protect power supplies, such as laptop chargers, mobile phone chargers, desktops, PDAs and industrial power supplies.
The MX13050 uses the principle of Power Line Filtering (also referred to as Electronic-Passive-Filter) to achieve noise filtering. It utilizes capacitors, resistors, and inductors connected in a network across the common and neutral terminals of the power line to form a low-pass filter. This low-pass filter attenuates any frequencies that fluctuate in power line noise above a specific frequency threshold. The purpose of the filter is to reduce the noise generated by the relayed equipment that is connected to the power line. The MX13050 is designed to achieve an attenuation level of greater than 70 dB at frequencies below 500 kHz.
The MX13050 has two inputs, one connected to the common line and the other connected to the neutral line. The outputs tie back into either line, and the module contains active commands to divert their frequencies to the shared common and neutral lines. This module uses a noise attenuation range of up to -45 dB and is ideally suited for digital applications that operate with different noise levels. The filtering provided by this module helps eliminate spikes and other noise generated by long cable locations that put their devices at risk of damage. The filtering range allows for a 3-pole cascading filter effect.
The module has an off-load guard mechanism that is designed to prevent overload by automatically shutting off when the filtering range is exceeded. This ensures that the amount of noise outputting is kept to the bare minimum so as not to cause any potential damage to the equipment. To improve the efficiency of the module, there are 3 different feedback options and over-voltage protection. The overload guard, 3-pole cascading filter and opto-isolator make the MX13050 suitable for a wide variety of applications. It can be connected to devices operating on both AC and DC voltage.
In addition, the MX13050 offers the characteristics of low thermal resistance, high efficiencies, small form factor, and low ripple and noise levels. This makes it an attractive product for a wide variety of applications such as computer peripherals, consumer electronics, industrial equipment, telecommunications equipment, instrumentation, and medical equipment. These factors combine to make the MX13050 a good choice for power line noise filtering.
