Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC): MX574ALCWI+ Application Field and Working Principle

MX574ALCWI+ is a type of analog to digital converter (ADC) produced byMX Electronic. It is a wide operating temperature range single channel 8-bit analog to digital converter. It is more accurate, faster and simpler in application compared to other converters with similar characteristics.

Application Field

MX574ALCWI+ converter finds its application in many areas where wide operating temperatures characterize the environment.Automotive,avionics,industrial and motion control are ideal application fields for this converter.It is designed for low resolution, high voltage and low power consumption applications.

This ADC has extremely low offset voltage, low integral nonlinearity and fast settling time. The device can be powered down with a single logic level write command, making it the perfect choice for future energy efficient applications.MX574ALCWI+ converter is usually chosen for applications such as temperature sensing, photo sensing,transducer and proximity sensing.

Working Principle

Analog to digital converters work with the principle of comparing incoming voltage level with a stepwise and fixed reference voltage level and give out a digital value as output.MX574ALCWI+ ADC works on a successive approximation procedure.The device is characterized by 8-bit resolution and highly regulated 0.5Vreference voltage.The temperature range over which the converter works specified by the manufacturer is -40° C to 85° C.

Once an analog voltage is connected to the converter, it is converted to a binary code by the successive approximation logic algorithm.The SAR logic stores the incoming voltage in the SAR latch and systematically cycles through the reference voltages.Once the equivalent voltage is matched, conversion is complete.The comparison between the input and reference is done by the comparator remains until the input voltage matches the reference during a cycle.

The output produced is alive at the output terminal in the form of a digital code.The output code is composed of eight parallel bits and a serial enable signal.The 8-bit digital output codes can be observed at the ON or OFF logic level for the continuous levels of analog input voltages.The output code can be used to measure the input voltage in the 0 to 0.5V range.
