The MX881R is a highly integrated and compact Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) - LED Driver with specially designed to drive dozens of LEDs from a single device. It is used for general interior automotive lighting applications such as dashboard backlighting, instrument clusters, map lights, and courtesy lamps. This device can be used for dimming, color changing and flashing applications.

The MX881R has many features that make it ideal for use in automotive lighting applications. It has both open-drain and push pull outputs and supports up to eight strings of 8.2V LEDs. It supports DAC-driven dimming with 256 discrete steps and PWM/analog dimming with 65,536 discrete steps. The LED current can be programmed in 256 increments with fine resolution of 20mA. It has a very low operating power consumption of 55mW, making it suitable for low power applications.

The device is designed with a secure, high-speed and low-EMI operation. The MX881R has a two-stage flash topology for fast and reliable response time. The onboard gate driver has a fully isolated built-in start-up circuit with protection from undervoltage lockout (UVLO) enabling proper start-up of the device even during a sudden power loss.

The MX881R works by receiving a control signal from a microcontroller or external driver. The LED output is then regulated by a digitally controlled current source composed of two high side and two low side MOSFETs. The LEDs are connected in series groups of 8 (up to 8 strings maximum) and the LEDs can be programmed to support dimming and color changing applications.

The MX881R has a built-in Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) used to monitor its operating conditions such as temperature, current and voltage. Additionally, it has an onboard watchdog timer which is used to detect abnormal conditions and automatically reset the IC if a fault occurs.

The device is designed to meet the specification of the Automotive Electronics Council’s (AEC) Q100 qualification stress test, making it suitable for automotive applications. The MX881R is offered in a small surface mount package which reduces the board space required for a lighting control system.
