MXL5KP18CA TVS - Diodes are unidirectional, bi-directional or tri-directional devices that protect sensitive electronic components and systems against either transients induced on the AC power lines or ESD (Electro Static Discharge). They are also used to protect high-frequency data lines from EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). MXL5KP18CA devices provide a combination of features, including high surge current ratings, low differential capacitance and low incremental surge resistance that make them particularly suitable for use in a variety of systems and applications.MXL5KP18CA typically consists of two separate devices; a bidirectional TVS diode along with a low-current bidirectional ESD diode. The TVS diode operates like an avalanche diode and has two terminals, anode and cathode, with one being positively charged and the other negative. In the event of an overvoltage transient, the TVS diode responds quickly and effectively diverts damaging current away from sensitive components. The ESD diode, on the other hand, operates more like a Schottky diode and has three terminals; anode, cathode, and ground. The anode is normally attached to the signal line and the cathode is connected to the ground line, effectively forming a low-impedance path to ground. When a brief electrostatic spike is detected, the ESD diode triggers and conducts the current safely to the ground line so that sensitive components are not damaged. MXL5KP18CA has a wide variety of applications including protecting sensitive devices in the automotive and consumer electronics industries.
