A TVS diode, or transient voltage suppression diode, is a specialized device designed to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes caused by ESD (electrostatic discharge), as well as lightning and other transients. Typically, a TVS diode is designed to clamp transient peak voltages and current within acceptable thresholds and safely discharge them to ground. The MXL5KP54CA TVS Diode is a leaded (through-hole) bidirectional device specifically designed to protect circulation pumping process power supplies, such as those commonly found in wastewater, sewage, and industrial process-related facilities.  

The MXL5KP54CA offers an integrated ESD protection from 60V to +60V (with a peak current of 75A) and a maximum breakdown voltage of 173V. It is housed in a robust uni and bipolar diode package that supports the highest surge ratings over all temperatures. The device guarantees a high degree of compatibility with the application’s typical operating parameters and provides weatherproof operation due to its high ESD immunity. The MXL5KP54CA is designed to meet the rigorous demands of the industrial automation, robotics, and power sub-system segments, which experience high levels of stress from surge currents, ESD, and other electrical disturbances.

The MXL5KP54CA’s key features—including a maximum surge current, maximum breakdown voltage, irradiance-level reverse leakage current, fast recovery time, and a bidirectional clamping capability—make it the ideal solution for protecting transmission lines, power supplies, and motor control circuits from voltage transients during inductive load switching, as well as other ESD events.  In addition, the device is designed to provide low leakage current, an important factor when protecting switch-mode power supplies. Furthermore, the MXL5KP54CA’s fast response time ensures that it can protect even the most sensitive of circuits from the damaging effects of overvoltage transients.

The MXL5KP54CA’s working principle is based on an avalanche breakdown effect. When subjected to a pulse voltage, the device’s junction will enter into an avalanche breakdown state. This state is reversible, allowing the MXL5KP54CA to dissipate excess energy immediately, as well as to reset and resume normal operation once the pulse has passed. Thus, the device can absorb both positive and negative overvoltage pulses by shifting the junction voltage and quickly resuming its low forward and reverse blocking capability when the voltage returns to normal levels.

By providing superior performance, the MXL5KP54CA is well-suited for a wide variety of applications, including circulation pumping process power supplies, robotics, and power sub-systems.
