The MXLSMCGLCE17A device is a Thyristor Surge Protection Device (TSPD), otherwise known as a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS). It is designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from electrical transients, spikes, and surges. The steel-oxide varistor consists of a steel-oxide core which is typically made up of zinc, manganese, and cobalt oxides. The zinc and manganese oxides are both electro-negative; the cobalt oxide is electro-positive. When an electrical field is applied to the steel-oxide core the zinc and manganese ions move towards the positive electrode, and the cobalt ions move towards the negative electrode. This creates a semicontinuous chain of cells (varistor) which reduces the electric voltage applied to the power lines. When an overvoltage or surge occurs, the varistor slows the flow of current on the power lines by providing a low resistance path to ground. As a result, the device works to reduce the peak voltage on the power lines to within the specified range, thus preventing damage to the electrical equipment. The capacitance rating of the MXLSMCGLCE17A helps reduce the level of EMI/RFI noise on the power lines.
