A TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) Diode is an electronic component allowing protection against electrical transients such as electrostatic discharges or ESD, voltage surges, over-voltages and EMI (electromagnetic interference). TVS Diodes typically contain multiple cells, referred to as a “p-i-n” structure, allowing for the dispersion of current through the diode during a surge scenario.The MXPLAD15KP75CA is a two-structure TVS diode designed with ESD protection as its primary purpose. This diode is typically used in Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) applications such as automatic doors, automatic garage doors, and car door locks. The MXPLAD15KP75CA is built into an integrated circuit package and can withstand current as high as 15KV.The diode’s design consists of two layers, including a silicon P-type layer sandwiched between the N-type layers. P-type layers, also called depletion layers, absorb electrical signals that would otherwise be sent to the sensitive components, provided that these signals have an amplitude of 15 KV or less. Hence, when an ESD event occurs such as a wave, the P-type layer will reflect the signal back, absorbing it in the process.
