Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are nowadays commonly used across a wide range of TVS - Diodes applications and play an important role in protecting electronic circuits from unwanted voltage spikes or chirps. Part of their immense popularity can be attributed to the features they possess, including fast response, low leakage current, wide working temperature range, excellent surge characteristics, and outstanding insulation capability due to their voltage dependent design.
The MXRT100KP51A is a modern example of an MOV, and is rated as a 500V-8A-700V prime varistor. Its construction consists of a ceramic core with a meandering pattern of silver-plated copper electrodes on both faces. The MOV works in a similar way to a diode, providing protection when excessive voltage is applied to it.
As with a diode, when the voltage across the MOV exceeds the specified breakdown voltage the current starts to increase exponentially, causing the MOV to become ‘saturated’ and the resulting surge voltage to be clamped to the level of the varistor. This is important because the maximum voltage that the components downstream of the MOV can handle is limited and therefore, if the surge voltage exceeds this limit, the damage to these components can be significant.
Physical protection is also offered by the MOV, as a result of its capability to absorb electrical energy in the form of pulses up to its maximum permissible energy. This energy is dissipated in the form of heat, safely away from the components that it is protecting. This improved protection does come at a cost however, as the device can suffer permanent damage if the peak energy of a pulse exceeds the specified maximum energy.
The MXRT100KP51A can be used in applications where surge voltages that are greater than the specified operating voltage of the downstream components, need to be clamped. Examples include medical equipment, line protection for power supplies and motor drives, battery protection, EMI/RFI protection, and device protection for automotive and industrial systems. In circuits where inrush currents are present, MOVs can also be used in conjunction with a fuse or circuit breaker in order to reduce the inrush current and thereby protect the components.
The MXRT100KP51A, like all MOVs, provides an effective and reliable means of protecting downstream components from potentially harmful spikes. It is characterized by an excellent surge handling capacity, fast response time, and a stable voltage-current relationship that is maintained over a wide temperature range. As such, it is a useful addition to any circuit board designer\'s arsenal.
